What is checked on the shaft, propeller and rudder?
Cutless bearing clearance is measured, shaft straightness and coupling alignment are checked with feeler gauges, and stern gland drip rate is counted both running and stopped. Blade damage and cavitation erosion on the propeller are recorded separately.
Why it works this way
Problems on the shaft line never appear alone: clearance in the bearing produces vibration, vibration tires the gland, and a tired gland lets water in. That is why all three are assessed together rather than one at a time.
