What is checked in deck gear and life-saving equipment?
Every load-bearing fitting on deck should have a backing plate beneath it; a windlass or davit added later usually gives itself away here, and the underside is inspected with a borescope. On the life-saving side, listing is not enough: liferaft service date, hydrostatic release and bottle pressures are read individually and the fire main is pressurised and tested.
Why it works this way
Safety equipment is used once, at the worst possible moment. If it does not work then, its presence meant nothing — which is why it is operated rather than ticked off.
